Inside Ash's camera bag

A love of photography is at the heart of Ash's Hungry Lens. I'm Ash, a Virginia photographer and the creative behind Ash Shutter Stories. My camera is a Sony a6400. This page is a home for the techniques, tools, and behind-the-scenes notes that accompany my food photos. Lens and setup details will be added with future shoots.

My Sony a6400: the photo matters more than the gear

My Sony a6400 is the camera behind my photography. For me, food photography is about noticing texture, choosing a clear subject, and finding an angle that tells the story of the dish. A top-down view can suit a full table, while a lower angle can reveal the layers in a sandwich or cake.

Natural light and subtle setups

Soft window light is a useful starting point for food photography. Try placing the dish beside a window, avoid harsh direct sunlight, and watch how shadows describe its shape. Be considerate in restaurants: keep equipment compact, don't interrupt other diners, and ask permission before photographing staff or behind-the-scenes spaces.

From hungry snapshots to brand shoots

Food • photos • love is the thread connecting this blog and my photography work. If you have a restaurant, bakery, or food-focused project in mind, visit Services & Collaborations and tell me what you are creating. We can discuss your goals, the look you want, and the practical details before planning a shoot.

A little photo reminder: slow down, notice the light, and let the food be the star. The most useful setup is the one that helps you tell the story in front of you.
